This is Debbie Bridge’s first newsletter for us, and I am pleased she has a comprehensive list of information to keep us up-to-date.
Of particular note is the official launch of the new HRINZ HR Competencies for professional accreditation and the Student Ambassador Programme at HRINZ’s annual Conference and Expo held in Wellington last month. Our Student Ambassador’s have been active and enthusiastic; already their involvement with the Institute has been instrumental in the creation of our new student section of the website. The HR Competencies are the result of a significant study by the Institute over the last few years. For full details on the study and the papers resulting from it, see here. Debbie refers us to the site for the new competencies later in this newsletter.
A quick couple of reminders for everyone: the research and publications fund is available for academic research submissions, and we are accepting new articles for the New Zealand Journal of Human Resources Management.
Warm regards

Student Ambassador Programme
As part of HRINZ’s continual outreach to the HR education community we started the HRINZ HR Student Ambassador Programme. Last issue we launched the programme and called for entries. We are now pleased to announce our three HRINZ Student Ambassadors for the 2007-2008 year, they are:
- Huong Nguyen at Victoria University of Wellington
- Jennifer Jongepier at University of Canterbury
- Suzanna Bowen at Otago University
Big congratulations out to them! Watch for these up and coming HR professionals on campus and in your classes.
New Student Website
HRINZ has recently started a Student version of our website, in association with the HRINZ HR Student Ambassadors. This is a one-stop shop for Students of Human Resources with a variety of resources including for assignments, first career moves, and learning about the variety of HR programmes at tertiary providers. Please refer your students to: http://students.hrinz.org.nz.
HRINZ New HR Competencies
HRINZ has launched the new HRINZ HR Competencies. These are internationally benchmarked and have a practitioner focus with a research base. They now have a wider focus on HR being more than HR Delivery to encompass areas such as business knowledge and strategic contribution. The can be viewed online here.
These HRINZ HR competencies are the standard for HRINZ Professional Membership and the soon to be launched Education Endorsement Programme (in the meantime, if you want more information on how your university or polytechnic can apply, please email Kelly.Shea@hrinz.org.nz.)
The Big HR Issues?
At the September 2007 HRINZ Conference Innovation@Work, HR practitioners created a list of the Big HR Issues they are dealing with right now or foresee in the near future. This list will be used for HumanResources magazine articles, Special Interest Groups, and is available online as a resource for educators and students for project and assignment ideas. This is accessible on the Student Website under “paper and project ideas”.
Your Ideas Please
We would welcome hearing your ideas about what we can do to help our members with HR knowledge and what you would like to see in this newsletter. Please email with your suggestions.
Future Issues
As well as discussing the ideas you send to us, in future issues we will be able to let you know about these developments at the Institute:
- Launch of the HRINZ HR Education Endorsement Programme
- Updating the NZ Academic Journal to make it more user friendly
- Updating the format for applying for Research and Publication Funding
- And more…
